**A New Approach to Emergency Shelters and Supportive Housing in Kamloops.

Kamloops needs a better approach to homelessness and shelter services—one that supports people in crisis while also protecting the safety and vitality of our neighbourhoods and business community.

** Currently, our Community Service Officer (CSO) office is located on Mission Flats Road. I believe our CSOs should be located in core business districts, and I would table a motion to have the CSO office relocated to two new locations—one in the Downtown Core and one in the Tranquille business district, with a satellite location in Valleyview

Deliver on the ‘Build Kamloops’ program to upgrade facilities, maintain the city’s reputation as Canada’s Tournament Capital, and ensure access to recreation for residents of all ages and abilities.

** We must continue investing in our recreation facilities so Kamloops can attract provincial, national and international tournaments. These facilities don’t just benefit our economy by bringing visitors to Kamloops—they benefit local residents every day by giving families and athletes more opportunities to participate in sport and recreation.

** Build Kamloops must continue to move forward to meet our community’s recreation needs. The facilities identified through Build Kamloops were not chosen behind closed doors—they were identified by our community through the Recreation Master Plan and the extensive public engagement that went into creating it.

​

** I believe one of the highest returns on investment for Kamloops is new soccer fields. As Mayor, my goal would be to see new soccer fields developed on the land the City has secured from School District 73 in Dallas and Brocklehurst. This is an opportunity to invest in our residents, grow our soccer community and strengthen Kamloops as a tournament destination.

Invest in critical transportation infrastructure, improve transit reliability, and strengthen connections between neighbourhoods through active transportation options.

** Our communities need better-connected routes. I would advance major road connections in Juniper, Aberdeen and Pineview so they continue to develop and, where possible, are opened to the public. I also want to advance a major connection between Dallas and Valleyview, including a multi-use path that would get residents off the shoulders of the Trans-Canada Highway and provide a safer connection between these communities.

** AAA multi-use paths are an important piece of infrastructure, but they are expensive to build and maintain. We also need to look at quick-build infrastructure and smaller, targeted improvements. There are affordable “micro-fixes” we can make to our already strong cycling network that can improve safety and connectivity without waiting years or spending millions. Sometimes, small improvements can make a big difference.

** When elected Mayor, I would also work with the TNRD to advance a new regional trail network from Kenna Cartwright Park toward Tobiano. The trail would be similar to the Okanagan’s popular rail-trail network, with a safe, accessible route and commanding views of Kamloops Lake. This could become a significant recreational asset for residents while also creating another reason for visitors to explore and stay in our region.

** The neighbourhouds of Sun Rivers and Sienna Ridge currently enjoy that quality of life that the residents of Kamloops enjoy while paying only a fraction of the costs for municipal Parks and Recreational facilities. By Default the residents of Kamloops are paying more to make up a tax shortfall of nearly $800,000 - $1,000,000 per year. These shortfalls are a equivalent to .5% - .65% tax subsidization.

 

We must ensure that this money is collected so we can continue to invest in facilities and maintain our high quality of life and lower or taxes.

** Industry needs to support industry. New Gold operates on our borders and benefits from the municipality that provides the community, workforce, and quality of life that its operation depends upon. Yet, the City of Kamloops is the only level of government that does not receive taxation from New Gold.

​

New Gold should contribute its fair share to the City of Kamloops.

​

Based on preliminary numbers, I anticipate that bringing New Gold into the City of Kamloops could result in a structural tax decrease of approximately 1%–1.5% for City of Kamloops taxpayers.
